Watch Key Terms to Know

Introduction to Watch Key Terms to Know

Quality timepieces are one of the most important items available for the stylish, on-the-go person. Watch designs have improved drastically over the past four hundred years, leading to endless innovative unique styles. It is important to understand the different parts of a watch so that when you leave our store with your new timepiece, you’ll be absolutely certain it’s the perfect piece for you. Arguably, the most important part of a watch is the movement or caliber. These are the inner workings of the watch, responsible for actually keeping accurate time, and moving the hands around the face of the watch.

Popular Watch Key Terms to Know

The body of the watch is called the case, which protects the movement. Most of the time, the case back is removable, to allow access to the movement. Atop the case is a small knob called the crown. This can be used to adjust the time or to keep the timepiece wound in the case of a manual timepiece. The front of the case contains the dial, where the hands and numerals clearly display the time. Overtop this is the crystal, a dome that protects the face. It can be made of acrylic, glass, or synthetic sapphire.

However, a watch is more than its most basic pieces, and many complications have been developed by manufacturers over the ages. Complications are useful features and functions that take a watch from a simple timepiece and further extend its usefulness. The most popular complication has typically been the chronograph function, which acts like a stopwatch. These are often activated by a set of toggles on the side of the casing for a smooth, easy function. Other watch models contain additional measurements for a time such as moon phase indicators and calendars. Still more contain interesting functions such as backlights and rotating bezels to make the watch easier to see in nighttime conditions.
