EARRING BUYING GUIDE

Parts of Engagement Rings

When shopping for an engagement ring, it's essential to know all the jeweler jargon to make the process as easy as possible. Familiarizing yourself with the parts of an engagement ring can also be helpful if your piece needs any professional repairs, allowing you to research and explain your problem thoroughly.

Mount (or Setting)

The ring setting, also known as the mount, refers to everything other than the center stone. Much of the overall design of the piece is determined by the setting. Some popular engagement ring settings include the solitaire, three stone, and halo. Knowing what you want can help narrow your search immensely.

Head

Head

An engagement ring's center stone is secured to the ring by the head. Typically, the head is made up of prongs or a bezel. Prongs are tiny spokes of metal that create a claw around the stone, while a bezel is a single metal piece that forms a collar around the gem. Prongs allow the most surface area of the stone to be visible but are also more prone to breakage.

Shoulders

“Shoulders” refer to the thicker parts of the band on either side of the stone, leading up to the head. They give the head stability. This part of the engagement ring can be inlaid on the top, sides, or both, with accent stones like small diamonds or other, more vibrant gems.

Side Stones

Side Stones

These are any gems added to the ring other than the center stone and are also often referred to as accent stones. The setting type determines the manner in which they are set. For instance, in a three stone setting, two large gemstones (though smaller than the center stone) will be set symmetrically on either side of the center stone.

Gallery

The ring's gallery is the space between the shoulders and beneath the head, visible only from the piece's profile. With hidden halo settings, this is where the halo of accent stones would be located. This space could also feature a cutout, making contrasting use of negative space, or remain empty.

Shank (or Band)

A ring's shank, or band, is the circular strip of metal to which the center stone and all accent stones are mounted. They can be forged in various precious metals and inlaid with stones via prong, bezel, channel, or pave settings. Engravings are usually etched on the underside of the shank.
